Early Interest in Computers

When Musk was 10 years old, one day at a shopping center, he saw a computer and was fascinated by it after reading the manual. He discovered that this was a machine that could execute different commands by writing programs, which he found incredibly cool. Musk really wanted to own it, so he kept asking his father.

Before long, he acquired the 1980s home computer, the Commodore VIC-20, which had 5K RAM and a basic tutorial. The programming course for this computer could be completed in about six months, but Musk couldn't sleep and spent a full three days and nights to finish what should have taken six months. From this, we can see that Musk's ability to absorb knowledge and learn was several times greater than that of an average person.

Adventurous Spirit: Exploring Beyond Computers

In addition to his love for reading and learning computer programming, Musk was also a true adventurer. He often went on adventures to different places with his cousins. One year, they tried to go door-to-door selling Easter eggs, and Musk even made various explosives and rockets (you can understand why he later founded SpaceX), and they would have BB gun battles, just like we did when we were kids!

They were also very interested in cosplay activities for computer games. Initially, they participated in a "Dungeons & Dragons" competition, and Musk led his cousins in role-playing, excelling and succeeding in this activity.

Challenges of South African Childhood

Musk's childhood was full of adventure and a willingness to try new things, often bringing many surprises to those around him. But please don't forget that he grew up in South Africa, a country full of violence and inequality.

Watch out for the next article where we discuss Elon's school experiences, including the bullying he encountered as a teenager. It will be one of his most difficult times growing up.
